Boost Steam Iron Performance
A steam iron should be flushed at least seasonally to remove mineral deposits that can cause the soleplate to get dull, and leave rusty water spots on your clothes. The best way to do this is to use distilled white vinegar, which is less harsh and cheaper than commercial steam iron cleaning products that can damage the iron.
Scrub the Soleplate
Keeping the iron's soleplate clean can help prevent it from getting stuck with starch or sizing residue and clogging the steam vents. To remove this build-up, mix table salt or baking soda with a bit of distilled white vinegar to make a paste and scrub the area. Some areas will need a little elbow grease, and let the mixture sit for 10 minutes before scrubbing again.
Remove Melted Plastic
If something has melted onto the iron, the plastic must be removed before it transfers to your next garment and will damage the fabric. To do this, turn off the iron and place the melted plastic-stained area on a shallow pan filled with ice cubes for five to 10 minutes.
